No bail for man accused of beating 7-week-old boy

A Melrose man was ordered held without bail this morning after he pleaded not guilty to charges he slammed his 7-week-old son to the ground yesterday in a dispute with the infant’s mother.

Carlos Edwards, 33, allegedly threw the infant to the ground at about 12:45 p.m. outside the child’s mother’s Cross Street home in Malden after he asked her for money and she refused, said Assistant District Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald.

“He said, ‘Here’s your baby. I hope you both die,’ ” said Charlene Nickerson, the baby’s grandmother.

The child was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he is recovering from a skull fracture and swelling of the brain, Nickerson said.

Edwards did not show his face at his arraignment this morning on charges of assault and battery of a child resulting in bodily injury, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

“He’s concerned at this point, and rightly so,” Edwards’ attorney, Cheryl McGillivray, said afterward. “I don’t think he understands the import at this time.”

Edwards dated the infant’s mother 23-year-old mother for about two years, Fitzgerald said.

“I can’t explain this. It’s just not right,” she said. “I want to make sure (Edwards) doesn’t get out.” He is due back in Malden District Court July 28.
